Resize an image to 512 × 512

Discord avatars, app icons, game profile pictures and Steam artwork all land on 512 square. It is a power of two, which is why so many platforms settled on it: every smaller version they need is an exact halving. Drop a photo in and it comes out at exactly 512 by 512, cropped to fit rather than squashed. Nothing is uploaded.

What 512 by 512 actually weighs in each format

We put the same 600 by 600 portrait through this tool at 512 by 512 and weighed all three outputs. JPG and WEBP at quality 90.

367.9 KBas PNG
35.3 KBas JPG at 90
19.7 KBas WEBP at 90
10xPNG vs JPG

PNG is lossless, which is why it is 10 times heavier than JPG here and 19 times heavier than WEBP. Use PNG only when you need transparency or perfectly crisp text and lines. For a photograph at 512 by 512, WEBP at quality 90 came out at 19.7 KB and is almost always the right answer.

Aspect ratio

512 by 512 is a perfect square

512 by 512 is square, and almost no camera shoots square. A photo from a phone is usually 4:3 or 3:4, and a DSLR is 3:2, so something has to give when it becomes a 512 pixel square. Roughly a quarter of the long edge is removed to make it fit.

That is what the Fit control is for. Crop to fill scales your photo until it covers the whole frame and trims the overflow, so nothing is distorted but something is lost. Fit inside scales until the whole photo is visible and pads the gap with a colour, so nothing is lost but bars appear. Stretch forces the photo into the frame and is the only option that distorts faces.

Crop to fill is the default here because a distorted face is much more obvious than a cropped edge, and because most systems asking for a fixed size expect the frame to be filled. Switch to Fit inside when the whole image genuinely has to stay visible, such as a logo or a diagram.

512 is the single most requested square size on the web, largely because Discord and most app stores converged on it.

Honest limits

What this tool will not do

It will not invent detail

If your original is smaller than 512 by 512, this tool will still produce a 512 by 512 file, but the extra pixels are interpolated rather than real. Enlarging interpolates, it does not add information. If you need a genuinely larger image, start from a larger original or try the image upscaler, which is honest about the same limit.

It will not let you choose what gets cropped

Crop to fill takes the centre of your photo. If the part that matters is off to one side, crop it deliberately first with the image crop tool, then bring the result here.

It will not hit a target file size

This tool fixes the dimensions, not the bytes. To land under a specific limit such as 100 KB, send the result through the image compressor, which searches for the quality that meets your target.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I resize an image to 512 by 512?

Drop your photo into the box above. The tool is fixed to 512 by 512, so the output is always exactly that, and it downloads as soon as you click. Nothing is uploaded to a server, the resize happens in your browser.

Will resizing to 512 by 512 distort my photo?

Not with the default setting. Crop to fill scales your photo until it covers the 512 by 512 frame and trims whatever hangs over the edge, so proportions are preserved. Only the Stretch option distorts, and it is there because a few systems genuinely want the whole image squeezed in regardless.

What file size should I expect at 512 by 512?

It depends entirely on format. Our 600 by 600 test portrait came out at 367.9 KB as PNG, 35.3 KB as JPG at quality 90, and 19.7 KB as WEBP at quality 90. Detailed photographs will be heavier than flat graphics at the same dimensions.

Which format should I choose for 512 by 512?

WEBP if the destination accepts it, since it was 56% the size of JPG in our test at the same quality. JPG if you need maximum compatibility. PNG only for transparency or crisp text, because at this size it was 10 times heavier than JPG.

What if my image is smaller than the target?

The tool will still output 512 by 512, but it cannot invent detail that was never captured. Upscaling interpolates between existing pixels, which softens edges. Start from the largest original you have.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. The file is read by your browser, drawn onto a canvas and encoded there. You can confirm it by opening your network tab while you use the tool, or by disconnecting from the internet and resizing anyway.
