The Reality of Online Image Theft
If you've published photographs, illustrations, or graphics online, your work has almost certainly been copied without permission. Reverse image search any of your published photos and you're likely to find them on sites you've never heard of — used without credit, without payment, and without permission.
A visible watermark won't stop determined thieves with Photoshop skills, but it does three powerful things: it deters casual theft (most image theft is opportunistic), it ensures your name travels with every share of your image, and it provides clear evidence of prior ownership for DMCA takedown requests.

Choosing Your Watermark Style
Single Position Watermark
A watermark in one corner (usually bottom-right) is the least obtrusive option. It's appropriate for casual social media sharing where you want credit without obscuring the image. The downside: it can be easily cropped out.
Tiled Watermark
Tiled watermarks repeat across the entire image in a diagonal grid. The image content remains visible and previewable, but removing every watermark instance requires significant manual effort. Use tiling for portfolio previews of high-value work you're selling or licensing.
Watermark Settings That Work
| Setting | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Opacity | 40–60% for casual sharing; 60–80% for portfolio protection |
| Colour | White (#fff) for most photos; dark grey for light backgrounds |
| Font size | 36–60px for 1200px+ images; 20–30px for thumbnails |
| Text | Your domain name or @username — drives traffic on every share |
| Position | Bottom-right for casual; centre or tiled for high-value work |
Watermarking for Different Platforms
Instagram: Bottom-right watermark at 40% opacity. Use your @handle so people can find you directly.
Pinterest: Bottom-centre watermark with your website URL. Pinterest images are reshared extensively — your URL will be seen by everyone who repins your content.
Portfolio sites: Tiled watermark at 50% opacity on preview images. Watermark-free versions are sent only after payment or client approval.
Stock photography previews: Tiled watermark. This is standard industry practice for preview images.
What Watermarking Won't Protect Against
A watermark is a deterrent, not a technical lock. Someone with Photoshop and time can remove most watermarks. For maximum protection of commercial work, register your copyright officially, use watermarks consistently, and monitor for infringement using reverse image search tools like Google Images or TinEye.
